Two Israeli designers have invented a table capable of withstanding the weight of brick, concrete and other materials when the quake struck.
Arthur Brutter and Ido Bruno, two experts on the design of the Institute of Art and Design Bezalel in Israel, said the tables would be useful in schools, offices, especially those which frequently occur earthquakes such as Japan.
When the earthquake, people often get under a table and not a few cases lost their lives as normal table will collapse. Thus, two Israeli designers got the idea about the type of table can tolerate the weight of the ceiling. The maximum volume of material that can withstand the type of table is about a ton.
Not only help protect human lives, goals against earthquakes also can make a way for rescuers in the search operation victims.
This table type is nominated for Designer of the Year by the Museum of London awarded. Currently, it is AD Miraz company in Israel to mass produced and put to use in schools.
Mr. Bruno said: "We try to create the table is light enough so that students can move; cheap to buy the majority of cases. The price of a high seismic area 2.5 times the normal table, but this time they use the double. "
The design team was in touch with organizations outside Israel and the United Nations to discuss measures to bring this type of hand to developing countries.
Endurance up to 1 ton
Director of the Center strong earthquake at the University of Victoria, New Zealand, said: "This type of table is useful in schools, at least in the developing countries. Do not be avoided completely but at least it helps limit casualties. "
Max Wyss, Director of Monitoring and Earthquake Risk Reduction in Switzerland said: "The earthquake areas can protect people from falling material when the quake struck, but it can not support weight of the material in the case of the lower layer of the buildings. "
