Jessie Alice "Jessica" Tandy (June 7, 1909 - September 11, 1994) is a theater actor and actress-American English.

She appeared on stage in London for the first time in 1926 at age 16, played Katherine opposite Laurence Olivier as Henry V, and the role of Cordelia opposite John Gielgud in the role of "King Lear" and several other plays. She also starred in British films.

After termination of first marriage (to Jack Hawkins), she moved to New York and met the actor Hume Cronyn, Canadian. They married and often acting on stage and on screen.

She first appeared on the American film The Seventh Cross (1944), then phimThe Valley of Decision (1945), The Green Years (1946, shoulder Cronyn's daughter), Dragonwyck (1946) with Gene Tierney plays the lead and film Forever Amber (1947).

The mid-1980s, she reappeared on stage, facing Hume Cronyn in notebooks FoxFire on Broadway in 1983 and adapted version of the TV with the same name four years later, won both a Tony and Emmy Awards for her role as Annie Nations. During this time, she also appeared in films such as Cocoon (1985), also with Cronyn.

She became the oldest actor won an Oscar for outstanding actress for her role in Driving Miss Daisy (1989). The film also brought her a BAFTA and a Golden Globe Award and was nominated actress Oscar for Best Movie for Fried Green Tomatoes movie (1991). During the peak of success, the magazine she was voted one of People's "50 Most Beautiful".

Childhood

Tandy was born in Geldeston in Metropolitan Borough of Hackney Road, (London). [1] is the youngest of three children of Jessie Helen (née Horspool) - school principal for mentally handicapped children - and Harry Tandy , a bagman for cordage maker. [2] His father died when Tandy was 12 years old, and then the mother must be taught evening courses to earn extra income. Tandy Dame Alice Owen school's School in London Borough of Islington.

Career

Tandy began his stage career in London was 16, acting opposite actors like Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud. Tandy started making films in English, but when the first marriage ended with Jack Hawkins, Tandy moved to live in the United States. In 1942, Tandy Hume Cronyn remarried the following year and played many roles in Hollywood films. She won the Tony for her role as Blanche Dubois in the play A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway in 1948.

She is a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1952. In three decades later, her acting career continued irregular, which has important roles in the film The Birds (1963) by Alfred Hitchcock, and a further role in the Tony winning play The Gin Game in 1977.

After winning the Tony Award for her role as Blanche DuBois in the play A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams on Broadway, (but lost the role in which the hands Vivien Leigh), her focus on the stage. In 20 years, she occasionally appeared on films such as The Light in the Forest (1958) and The Birds (1963).

In the early 1980s her film career to recover, with roles in the films The World According to Garp, Best Friends, Still of the Night (both in 1982), The Bostonians (1984), and movies great Cocoon (1985), opposite Cronyn, reuniting the team that she takes in the science fiction film * batteries not included (1987) and sci-fi film Cocoon: The Return (1988). She and Cronyn had worked together more and more, in theater and television, notably in 1987 FoxFire play earned her an Emmy. However, acting in her colorful film Driving Miss Daisy (1989), as a sub par Jewish elderly, stubborn southern United States, has earned her an Oscar for actress Best.

Tandy was selected as one of People magazine 50 Most Beautiful People of the world in 1990. She was nominated for Supporting Actress Oscar for best film of civilians in Fried Green Tomatoes successful (1991), and starred along with her daughter Tandy Cronyn in drama The Story Lady (1991), Used People (1992, plays the mother of Shirley MacLaine), drama To Dance with the White Dog (Hume Cronyn in 1993 with her husband), Nobody's Fool film (1994), and Camilla (also with Cronyn, 1994). Camilla is her last movie, at age 84.

Personal life

The Tandy's first marriage to actor Jack Hawkins of England in 1932, brought a daughter - Susan Hawkins (born 1934). The couple divorced in 1940. Tandy Hume Cronyn remarried in 1942. They have two children: daughter Tandy Cronyn and his son Christopher.

Before you move to Connecticut, she lived for years with Cronyn near Pound Ridge, New York and lived together until his death in 1994. In 1990, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but she still struggles with illness and worked for 4 years. Previously, she was treated angina (Angina pectoris) and glaucoma (glaucoma). She died at home on 1.9.1994 in Easton, Connecticut, (USA).
